It seems like a lot of students tend to hate English because the ideas may sometimes seem stupid (too simple) or insignificant (too complicated and useless).

But it’s interesting to see these same ideas later crop up in unexpected ways. Here’s a few ways that I have “encountered” the English AOS and Modules in the past:

Wicked: The Musical

wickedmusical

I saw this musical play 3 weeks ago. It was fantastic! I loved the sets, though the ending did seem a bit contrived and soap drama-esque. The play is actually based on a novel by Gregory Maguire.

As an (unofficial) prequel to The Wizard of Oz, it attempts to explain the origins of the Wicked Witch of the West’s “wickedness”.

Without spoiling it, I’d like to point out that this could be a useful related text for Belonging. There are definitely ideas about belonging/not belonging.

Here’s a quick list of some questions for History and Memory. I haven’t had time to do an analysis on it yet.

Past HSC Questions:

2009:

Analyse the ways history and memory generate compelling and unexpected insights.

2008:

Compare how the texts you have studied emphasise the complexities evident in the interplay of history and memory.

2007:

How have the texts studied in this elective challenged your ways of thinking about ‘History and Memory’?

There are 2 changes that should be noted, before we have a look at the past HSC questions for the English Advanced Module C: Representation and Text – Elective 1: Conflicting Perspectives.

  1. The Elective was previously called “Telling the Truth” - I’ve changed the past HSC questions below to be about Conflicting Perspectives.
  2. The examination rubric for 2009 onwards in Module C have changed very slightly (there is essentially no difference). To read the “new” rubric: BOS.

Nevertheless, here are the past HSC questions for Telling the Truth, which have been adapted for Conflicting Perspectives. There are also some practice questions used by high schools.

I’ve also underlined the keywords in each question. As you’ll see, each question falls into a certain “type” of question:

  1. Question about your understanding/thoughts of Conflicting Perspectives.
  2. Question about how the composer’s representation affects meaning.

Can you figure out which category, each of the questions below fall into? Some may fall into more than 1 category.

With the 2009 changes to the HSC English syllabus, I’m finding the Module B and Module C the hardest to tutor out of the 3 Advanced Modules. Module A is easy, because it is basically the same and, in fact, easier, because it no longer focuses on “Into the Wild”, which sometimes stumped students.

At first I thought Module C: Conflicting Perspectives would be easy. I mean, isn’t it just replacing the word “Truth” with “Conflicting Perspectives”?

Apparently not.

As such, I had a good look and think about what this Module means and how to best explain it to my students.

Here’s an FAQ that you might helpful:
